Let’s Start Where I Grew Up : Coron, Palawan: A Hidden Gem in the Philippines

Hi, my name is Thedem “Thedz” Alarte. I am originally from Coron, Palawan. By the way, this is not an autobiography. I just want to let you know who am I and where I grew up.

We all know that Palawan is everyone’s dream place for a vacation. It is not a dream for me anymore. This is the place where I grew up.

When I introduce myself in a group of new friends here in Manila, I always told them that I grew up in a Paradise. For me, Coron is the real definition of “Paraiso”. Literally and figuratively. The nature is superb. The views are breathtaking. And the people are awesome.

Where is Coron?

Coron is a small town in the northernmost part of Palawan. It is part of the Calamianes Group of Islands where it is composed of four different municipalities. Coron was known to be a fishing village before but when the tourism started to boomed, it is slowly becoming a tourist destination. There were still some people whose occupation is fishing but most of them now are starting to convert their fishing boat into tourist boat. Practically speaking, it is where they can earn more with less effort.

There is just a trivial fact about Coron. Coron Town is not in Coron Island. Coron is in Busuaga Island. It occupies half portion of it. Confused already? Here’s a map to help you digest it better:

By looking at the Map, you will see the Coron Island just below the Busuanga Island. Generally speaking, that’s the real Coron.

Coron is the main tourism hub of the region and has more accommodations and tours, and is the usual jump off point to the surrounding destinations, which is why many of the attractions in Calamianes are often associated with Coron even when they are not technically part of other town.

For example, Calauit and Black Island are actually in Busuanga, but most people think they’re in Coron. The town of Culion is also often tagged Coron, when it is, in fact, a separate municipality.

Coron, Palawan: A Hidden Gem in the Philippines

One of the highlights of Coron is its dive sites. The town is home to several World War II shipwrecks, making it a paradise for diving enthusiasts. The most famous of these shipwrecks is the East Tangat Gunboat, which was sunk by the American forces during the war. Divers can explore the wreck and see the marine life that has made it their home. Other popular dive sites include the Okikawa Maru, the Akitsushima, and the Lusong Gunboat.

Aside from diving, Coron also offers other exciting activities such as island hopping and snorkeling. Visitors can take a boat tour to explore the nearby islands, including the famous Kayangan Lake, which is known for its clear blue waters and limestone cliffs. Another must-visit island is the Twin Lagoon, where visitors can swim in the saltwater and freshwater lagoons.

Coron town itself is also worth exploring. Visitors can take a stroll around the town and visit the local market, where they can buy souvenirs and taste local delicacies. The town also has a number of bars and restaurants where visitors can relax and enjoy the view of the sea.

But Coron is not just about the water activities and natural attractions, the town also has a rich cultural heritage. The Tagbanua people, the indigenous tribe of Coron, are known for their traditional skills such as weaving, basketry, and beadwork. Visitors can learn more about the Tagbanua culture by visiting the Tagbanua Heritage Center.

Despite its growing popularity, Coron still manages to retain its laid-back atmosphere. There are no shopping malls, no fast food chains, and no traffic jams. It’s the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and just relax.

If you’re planning a trip to the Philippines, make sure to add Coron, Palawan to your itinerary. This hidden gem offers something for everyone – from diving and island hopping to culture and relaxation. With its natural beauty and friendly locals, Coron is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who visit.

In conclusion, Coron Palawan is a must-visit destination if you’re looking for a tropical paradise. With its beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, and rich cultural heritage, Coron offers something for everyone. Whether you’re a diving enthusiast, a culture buff, or just looking for a place to relax, Coron is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. So pack your bags and head to Coron, Palawan for an unforgettable vacation.
